GPRS charges

When I bought my phone, I was given a new 3G sim card, and a new 3G plan.

So since I’m wayyyyy outdated, I asked the sales person regarding 3G. He told me that with 3G connection, I can do video calls, and download stuffs faster. Since my new phone support download speed of up to 7.2 Mbps, I thought to myself it’s a nice offer.

Then I was wondering how GPRS charges were calculated. He told me that I only pay if I exceed 10 MB quota per month, which I will get for the next 6 months. Then I asked him, how is it charged? Downloads or uploads? He told me that only downloads we used to calculate the amount of GPRS charges imposed.

My girlfriend thinks that this information is wrong, so I had to email the customer support and re-confirm the fact.

Today, another customer service called me. He told me that for GPRS, BOTH uploading and downloading of data packets are counted. So, in short, I was cheated! But maybe the sales person don’t know anything anyway.

The good news is, I don’t think I’ll ever exceed the 10MB quota.

The bad news is, there’s no way I can check my usage (via my phone), and all I have to rely on is the monthly bills. After playing with my phone, I realised I can check the data usage via the “Log” option. I think I should write another post with all the features in depth.

So those of you who love to surf too much, make sure you sign up for a GPRS plan. It’s worth it especially you are relying on services that uses email, uploading/downloading etc. However, price plans are quite expensive (IMO).

Well, I just can’t wait for my 3G sim card to be activated. Then I can start video calling my girlfriend! :)
